Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart quietly welcomed 2010 together on an island off the south coast of England – a visit that made for an exciting evening for some young locals.

Pattinson, 23, and Stewart, 19, were spotted by a young fan on New Year’s Eve in Ventnor, a seaside resort on the Isle of Wight, 80 miles south of Pattinson’s family home in west London. The New Moon costars happily posed for photos with the fan outside a grocery store – before vanishing like, well, vampires.

After the pics appeared on a local blog, word spread quickly, and young fans scoured the island looking for the duo. “All the young girls have been trying to find him,” said store manager Jez Harmer. “They have been out on a hunt.” But they turned up no clues about where Pattinson and Stewart – who have been coy about their relationship – might have gone”It’s literally a mystery,” Harmer said.

British celebrities like Kate Moss, Russell Brand, Peaches Geldof and Amy Winehouse have all paid visits to Ventnor, says Ventnorblogger Sally Perry.

“Well-known artists and musicians have found that they can live normal lives in Ventnor, away from the media glare,” she said. “So others tend to follow suit by choosing our lovely town for their special getaways.”
