In fact, consider other great romantic figures in fiction, and a pattern starts to form: Mr Rochester? Lying toad. Mr Darcy? Emotional cripple. Edward Cullen? Controlling, and, frankly, creepy. In real life these characters would have most sensible women running for the hills. Yet confined within a book’s pages, they are strangely alluring. Perhaps it is their inaccessibility (the person who, on a blog dedicated to listing one’s favourite fictional crushes plumped for Hazel from Watership Down will know all about that). Or perhaps it’s what happens when reality is tossed aside in favour of imagination.

But while many of the great romantic figures in fiction would make for poor company, there’s no denying their charisma. Here is our list of the top 10, from high-brow to chick lit.

Sparkly and unusually pale because he is, to all intents and purposes, dead, our vampire friend wouldn’t, on paper, make the ideal boyfriend. And yet to Bella Swan, and millions of Twi-hards across the world, Edward is perfect. Perhaps it’s his old-fashioned, chivalrous charm (he is more than 100 years old), or his unwavering devotion to Bella that has him creeping into her bedroom at night to watch her sleep. Either way, it is enough to override his less appealing characteristics; such as his appetite for blood; his cold-as-marble body or his aforementioned penchant for, er stalking.

Many outlets are circulating a rumor that Robert Pattinson has signed on for his next movie.

According to reports on sites like Glamour UK, the Twilight star and Emma Watson “are to get steamy in a lusty new art-house flick” called Dark Arc, the remake of a 2004 release.

Casey Affleck is supposedly in discussions to complete the film’s “love triangle” connecting an artist, a graphic designer and their muse.

However, the growing speculation online is not correct.

Xavier Samuel turned some Twilight heads when he stepped out with his model girlfriend on Monday in NYC. So since the Twilight star is attached, did he ever go on double dates with his co-stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart?

Xavier and his girlfriend Shermine Shahrivar walked around holding hands in Soho after having lunch at Bar Pitti in NYC on Monday.

So OK! caught up with the Twilight star Tuesday night the grand opening of Lavo Nightclub in NYC to see whether Xavier ever went on double dates with his Twilight co-stars.

We told you yesterday about the somewhat surprising connection between Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” music video and Robert Pattinson’s next flick “Water for Elephants,” and luckily for us, MTV Movies Blog editor Adam Rosenberg got a chance to chat with that connection yesterday after “Bad Romance” won Video of the Year at the VMAs. Director Francis Lawrence teased a possible release date for “Water for Elephants” and also dished about his relationship with Gaga.

“I would love to [work with Gaga again]. No I haven’t [heard from her] because I pretty much became unavailable right after [the 'Bad Romance'] shoot. I was off making ‘Water For Elephants’ for the better part of a year. But if she had a new song and wanted to do something, I would do it in a second,” Francis shared. “She was really fun to work with.”

Gaga’s Little Monsters have their own brand of fan dedication, but it seems like no fandom can possibly come close to the insane dedication shown by Twi-hards. Francis said that, when comparing acolytes, it was the “Twilight” fans who made themselves most known.

Was Broadway always part of your plan?
No, I had terrible stage fright, so people eventually stopped bringing it up. But when I was coming back from making Bel Ami with Robert Pattinson, my agent, who also represents Laura Linney, asked me if I wanted to read for Time Stands Still, and I completely forgot I had stage fright. Literally, walking home from the audition, I was like, Oh, shit, I just remembered I hate acting in front of people. So now I’m sort of ignoring it.

I love how casually you just namedropped R-Patz. Are you a Twilight fan?
OK, first of all, publicists train you to say your credits along with your costars. You can’t be shy about self-promotion; it’s like Kathy Griffin or something. [Laughs] I’m a very lazy pop culture fan—if it involves leaving my living room, I’m pretty clueless—so I’ve never seen a single Twilight movie, and I guess I missed it when it was on Starz. But Rob’s a lovely individual.

Do you two share a love scene in Bel Ami?
We do. But he’s like your best friend’s little brother, so we would just laugh and make fun of each other the entire time. He thought it was outrageous how comfortable I was being naked. I was like, “That’s because I’m 20 years older than you.” Seriously, I’ve never felt so old in my entire life.
