Official BREAKING DAWN estimate is $72 million, or just a bit off from NEW MOON’s $72.7 million. Wknd should wind up around $140M. #twilight

Box Office Report: ‘Twilight: Breaking Dawn’ Eyeing Franchise Best $73.5 Mil Friday

The question now is whether the third installment in Summit Entertainment’s vampire franchise can hit $140 million for the weekend; “Happy Feet Two” looking at soft $22 million to $24 million debut, but is hoping for strong Thanksgiving legs.

Summit Entertainment’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn-Part 1 is on course to score the second-best opening of 2011, but it remains to be seen whether it can match the $142.8 million debut of The Twilight Saga: New Moon on the same weekend two years ago.

Cronenberg Talks Robert’s Fans The Excitement Around Cosmopolis With Robert

Now wrapped, it should arrive next year, and when we spoke to the director on his press tour for “A Dangerous Method” in Los Angeles last week, we asked if the actor’s fame had given him any pause in casting Pattinson.

To the contrary. ”I kind of enjoy that,” he told us with a smile. ”Frankly, in a weird way, its almost in parallel with Keira [Knightley]. In England she’s got a lot of baggage. It’s not hers, it’s the journalist and the critics, who can be very nasty. I think, for me, you can’t ignore the baggage, but when you’re making the movie, it doesn’t exist. It’s not there. All you’re dealing with is the reality of this person as an actor. And I love that.”

Indeed, the director is fully aware that Pattinson’s presence is likely to bring him a new audience, and he’s pleased about the prospect. ”The excitement around ‘Cosmopolis’ because of Rob was terrific. It was fun. The idea that these kids, that they really continue to be excited. I’ve said this about Viggo [Mortensen]. If you’re a fan of Aragorn in ‘Lord of the Rings’ then you don’t have to see ‘Eastern Promises,’ but if you’re a fan of Viggo as an actor you must see ‘Eastern Promises.’ And its the same with Rob. If they’re really Rob fans as opposed to Edward…whatever the name of the character is. Rob fans will want to see ‘Cosmopolis.’ “

And it sounds like fans will be pleased, and the doubters silenced, as the director couldn’t be happier with his choice. ”He’s fantastic in it. They’ll see him do things they’ve never seen him do, believe me. They’ll be blown away,”he said. “Cosmopolis” doesn’t yet have a release date or distributor, but we’d put good money on a debut at Cannes or Toronto next year, before a fall 2012 release.

Kristen Talks About Robert & Breaking Dawn to EW

Dedicated Twilight fans might recognize the song that plays during the long-awaited wedding between Edward (Robert Pattinson) and Bella (Kristen Stewart) when they see Breaking Dawn this weekend (if they haven’t seen it already; the film made over $30 million in midnight screenings Thursday night). It’s a special ‘wedding version’ of the Iron & Wine song, ‘Flightless Bird, American Mouth’ that played during the prom scene in the first Twilight movie way back when in 2008.

“Before we even started shooting the first Twilight with [director] Catherine Hardwicke, I was rehearsing with Rob and we were sort of dancing around this room, trying to do this scene,” Stewart tells EW. “I put on Iron & Wine’s ‘Flightless Bird, American Mouth’ and I just became instantly emotional. Rob couldn’t handle it — it got weird! But I was like, ‘oooh, this is perfect.’”

Stewart says that they ended up playing the song for her on-set when they filmed the actual scene, and the rest is Twilight history. Listen for parts of the song to play during the long-awaited love scene too: “I think our composer played with it and you hear the melody throughout the film,” says Stewart.
