Within moments of meeting Robert Pattinson, GQ.com learns a valuable lesson: you simply can’t compete with Twilight fans. Having previously expressed his admiration for Martin Amis in an interview, it was decided we should present everyone’s favourite server-crashing undead heartthrob with a copy of the new Amis novel Lionel Asbo. Sadly one literary-minded Edward Cullen devotee has trumped our gift. “I got given a first-edition signed copy of Money by a Twilight fan in Lisbon yesterday,” reveals Pattinson. “She was trying to tell me that she found it in Massachusetts while we were surrounded by all these people screaming.” Pattinson stars in David Cronenberg’s striking and strange new film Cosmopolis, out this week, which sees him as an otherworldly billionaire sating his carnal, financial and intellectual desires riding through town in the back of a limousine in search of a haircut. After some preliminaries (when presented with the latest edition of GQ he cries out “Andrew’s wearing my suit!”), he talks about his hip-hop moment of glory, the worst haircut he’s ever had and what he’s learned from working with Frida Giannini at Gucci…

Your character has two lifts in his huge apartment, one of which is soundtracked by hip-hop. Which rapper would you have in your lift?
Robert Pattinson: Definitely Ol’ Dirty Bastard. The biopic looks amazing! That guy Michael K Williams as well – I was obsessed with The Wire for ages. The guy who is directing – Joaquín Baca-Asay, who is James Gray’s director of photography – is amazing. All his movies look incredible.

How did you feel when Tinie Tempah shouted you out on Chase & Status’ “Hitz”?
What? [delighted, bewildered] I haven’t heard it. I keep hearing everyone talking about him but for some reason I never really got into British rap. I don’t know why.

The line is “Like Rob Pattinson I make a lot of n****s jealous”
Wow. That’s really cool, actually. That’s amazing. I didn’t realise I had that relevance [laughs]. I wonder what made him single me out?

But she did ask about your worst haircut…
I did this movie about Salvador Dali a few years ago and had hair extensions and a little bob. That was incredibly bizarre. The extensions were temporary as well. I was trying to swim to somehow get in shape two days before we started shooting in this apartment complex in Barcelona. There were all these children everywhere… and I was this weird, pasty, hungover person with a girl’s black bob, swimming in the pool with huge clumps of hair falling out. I had my whole body totally waxed as well because Dali didn’t haven’t any body hair. It was the most terrifying thing – this is terrible, but I saw the potential cannibal guy [Luka Magnotta] inthe Sun today and I looked a bit like him.

Robert Pattinson has hinted that he is moving away from his movie heartthrob persona for future roles.

The actor found fame as the archetypal brooding lead Edward Cullen in the Twilight films and won himself a hoard of female fans in the process.

But he insisted “the next few things I’m doing are all quite different”.

His latest projects have yet to be titled but he revealed one is “actiony and funny as well, and the next one after that is pretty strange”.

“It’s not like a cool part,” R-Patz elaborated.

“He’s a really strange person and a bit of a simpleton, which I haven’t really done before… apart from in my real life,” he laughed.

The actor seems to take his “cinema god” status in his stride, and said it can be useful in attracting a new audience to a film like his latest release, David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis.

“I’ve done three premieres for this and to see screaming teenagers coming in to see Cosmopolis is the craziest thing in the world,” he said.

“One of the most interesting things about it I think is the fact that it’s making two audiences collide.

“And if you get one out of every 500 people to get into Cronenberg movies who wasn’t before then it’s great.”

Robert Pattinson has been inundated with toothpicks from fans, after mentioning that he has been chewing them since he quit smoking.

The ‘Cosmopolis’ star claimed that he chews on the small wooden sticks to keep him busy while he withdraws from nicotine.

“I quit smoking the other day and didn’t even really realise I’d said anything about it. I’ve been chewing these f***ing toothpicks all the time. Someone noticed in Cannes and literally the next day in Lisbon, then in Paris and in Berlin there were about 20 people on the red carpet giving me huge amounts of toothpicks. Thousands of them,” Contactmusic quoted him as saying.

Pattinson, who enjoys the attention his fans give him, even took a devoted admirer of his to dinner when he was shooting in Spain.

“I was playing Salvador Dali and there was this one girl waiting outside my apartment every day for about three weeks. There was one day when I was just so chronically bored I said to her, ‘Do you want to just go to dinner or something? No one else wants to hang out with me.’

“Her parents had a restaurant, she took me there and I complained about everything in my life for about two hours, then she gave me the bill to pay and was never back outside my apartment ever again,” he added.

“I don’t really know how accepted I am,” says Robert Pattinson as he sips on an enormous paper cup of Coke. “Nothing ever matters to me apart from the people with negative opinions. That’s literally it. That always drives me on to the next thing. It’s funny, you just focus on them and then the next movie. That’s the only thing you’re thinking about when it comes out.”

For someone with the world at his feet – he has the Twilight franchise behind him and David Cronenberg’s icy drama Cosmopolis as his next release – Pattinson gives a good impression of a man plagued with self-doubt. “I’ve never really taken myself seriously as an actor,” he says, fresh off a plane from Germany, where, he notes by the by, everybody seems to hate him.

“It is surprising the amount of people who think I’m going to be really dumb,” he says. “I think they think anyone who has done teen movies is just an idiot. I don’t know, maybe I am. Some of the best actors, if you talk to them, they’re not the smartest people in the world.”

Eric Packer, the character Pattison plays in Cosmopolis is not stupid. The film, an adaptation of Don DeLillo’s 2003 novel set mostly in Packer’s limousine, concerns a financial whiz-kid who is either having sex, having a finger inserted into his bottom (an on-the-move prostate exam), engaging in lengthy overblown monologues, losing vast sums of money, dodging an assassin, seeking a haircut, or all of the above. The film premiered at this year’s Cannes film festival. The majority of reviews have been positive, particularly in Pattinson’s favour, but frankly, it could have gone either way. It is not the most easily palatable of films.

We are 30 short days away from new Breaking Dawn Part 2 clips and info!!! Breaking Dawn has been confirmed to be attending San Diego’s 2012 Comic-Con which starts with preview night on July 11th. Hall H officially opens on Thursday July 12th, just 30 days from today. Historically Twilight panels have always been on Thursday, but no programming can confirm this yet. This also means Breaking Dawn SWAG at the Summit or Lionsgate booth.Last year it started the Monday before preview night.
