‘New Moon’ Mania Sweeps Comic-Con

Greetings from San Diego, Twilighters! Your MTV Movies team has hit the ground running — and naturally, one of our first stops during Wednesday’s Comic-Con preview night was the Summit booth, home to the next “Twilight” movie.

Now, you might remember that last year’s booth was a bit — how shall we put this? — ; ess than eye-dazzling. It was Summit Entertainment’s first year at the world’s biggest comic convention, few outside the fandom had heard of “Twilight,” and the biggest attraction they had was a cardboard cut-out of Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, available for photos.

This year, “New Moon” mania is in full effect. An impressive booth sits in the middle of the convention floor, showing off three enormous character photos of Rob, Kristen and Taylor Lautner. A spinning, “Let’s Make a Deal”-like wheel gives fans the opportunity to win all kinds of “Twilight” swag, and the lines promise to be as long as the list of high schools the Cullens have attended. With less than a month until filming begins on the third “Twilight” movie “Eclipse,” many fans can’t help but wonder whether this will be the flick where Edward and Bella, er, I mean Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart finally do it. You know, finally come out as a real-life couple! Well, the upcoming issue of People, featuring a super-sexy shot of Rob on the cover, joins in the speculation, getting to the bottom of the 23-year-old’s thirst for his “New Moon” co-star. Kinda.

Though neither Robert nor Kristen talked with the magazine, sources close to the two did, offering some insights into the pair’s are-they-or-aren’t-they relationship. And wouldn’t you know, it reads just like a page from Stephenie Meyer’s vampire romance. If you live in the San Diego area, we suggest you buy some ear plugs, stat. Variety is reporting that “New Moon” stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner will appear at Comic-Con 2009 this week to promote the “Twilight” sequel. Cue the squealing teens!

Fans have been speculating for months whether the Saga’s stars would turn up for the event, with keen interest focused on RPattz who is in the middle of filming “Remember Me” in New York City. According to the report, Robert, Kristen and Taylor will participate in an off-site press conference Thursday morning and will attend a Hall H panel later in the afternoon at the San Diego Convention Center.
